What is Multiple Sclerosis

Persons suffering from Multiple Sclerosis need to develop a good relationship with their doctor. This is why finding a doctor with whom they relate well is a very important step; however, this step can be not only difficult but also stressful.

There are some basic principles that need to be accounted for when doing so.  Even if insurance companies don’t differentiate between physicians, a family physician is trained to take care of general problems, but MS isn’t a general health problem. The best choice is finding a good neurologist, because neurologists are physicians that specialize in dealing with diseases of the nervous system, including MS.

Even in this case, not all neurologists are the same, because even if they are trained to diagnose neurologic disorders, not many of them are capable and/or interested in managing a disease after the diagnosis. Persons that have MS need to find a physician that is willing and capable to work with them on a long-term basis.

So, what are the factors that need to be taken under consideration when choosing a physician? Like in any relationship, there needs to be a personal compatibility. Some persons might want a doctor to tell them exactly what to do, while other want to have more choices and a certain freedom. This depends entirely on the personality of the person diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and this is why each individual needs to find a physician with whom he or she is compatible. As always, having communication with the physician is really important, this is why, a healthy doctor-patient dialogue is always recommended.

A thing that needs to be remembered is the fact that good physicians are usually very busy. This is why it is important to write down any questions you might have before visiting your physician. Also, always have a list with your medication and dosages.

You might not find a good MS physician in your area; this is why it is important to seek and locate a good physician outside your area. To do so, you can try talking to other people that have MS. Remember, that even if it is important to have a relationship with a specialist, visits are usually made once or twice a year. A useful thing is to be able to contact your doctor’s office with questions that might arise between appointments. If you know your doctor and your doctor knows your case, then a phone call can, most times, save you a visit.
