Sexuality and Intimacy in Multiple Sclerosis

Studies revealed that 5 to 30% of the US male population under 40 reported sexual problems. Men over 40 have more frequent sexual problems, 15-52% reporting them.

Studies regarding the sexual problems of men with Multiple Sclerosis have revealed, as with women, varying sexual problem. However, one of the most frequent and common complaint in MS is the difficulty of acquiring or maintaining an erection (25-80% reported this).  The studies also revealed that the nature of the problem is not only physical but also psychogenic (emotional).

Besides the erectile problems, men with Multiple Sclerosis reported decreased genital sensation, difficulties with ejaculation, fatigue, and decreased libido, interest or arousal.

Zorzon’s study – the most comprehensive and methodologically sound up to date – revealed that only 35% of men with MS didn’t have sexual problems, while the remaining 65% reported multiple problems. Zorzon’s study also found that men with Multiple Sclerosis believe that their sexual problems have a noticeable impact on their intimate relationship.
