Sexuality and Intimacy in Multiple Sclerosis

Most men with MS frequently report erectile problems. As a series of nerve impulses traveling from the brain to the spinal cord and penis initiate and maintain an erection, it is understandable how MS can affect one’s ability to initiate and maintain an erection.

The lower area of the spinal cords has nerve pathways traveling to and from the genitals, thus allowing reflex erections which don’t involve the upper parts of the spinal cord often affected by MS. Thus, reflex erections can be obtained by stimulating the penis and scrotum using a vibrator. Another way to obtain a reflex erection is “Stuffing” which implies inserting the flaccid penis into the vagina (the vagina needs to be well lubricated). Even if in this case a reflex erection is not achieved, this produces pleasurable sensations for both partners.

To achieve erections there are a number of other alternatives, like oral medications, medications administered by injection, penile prosthesis and non-medical and non surgical interventions
