Sexuality and Intimacy in Multiple Sclerosis

Vaginal lubrication is controlled by multiple pathways in the brain and spinal chord. Basically, there is psychogenic lubrication – which originates in the brain and reflexogenic lubrication – which occurs trough direct stimulation.

To increase psychogenic lubrication, establishing a relaxing, romantic or sexually stimulating environment for sexual activity and prolonging foreplay, is recommended. Reflexogenic lubrication can be attained by oral or manual stimulation of the genitals.

For women that experience decreased vaginal lubrication, the use of water-soluble lubricant is also a good choice ( KY Jelly, Replens, Astroglide). Petroleum-based jellies like Vaseline are not recommended for vaginal lubrication because they increase the risk of bacterial infection.
