Sexuality and Intimacy in Multiple Sclerosis

Decreased libido because of MS can make one avoid situations associated with intimacy and sex, which only leads to hurting one’s partner. This is why communication is crucial, and in the periods of diminished sexual drive, partners should not neglect sensual, non-sexual aspects of the relationship, like handholding, gentle stroking of the face, backrubs.
A person with MS must relearn to use his or hers sexuality once the CNS compromised the libido. This means relearning one’s sensual nature – loving gestures, little gifts, hugs, should not be forgotten.
Persons without a partner will want to explore their sensual and erotic body zones, as this is an important step in restoring their libido. A combination of cerebral sexual stimulation (movies, books, one’s fantasy) and masturbation or physical-self exploration can be helpful. Using sexual toys should not be disregarded also.
