After the identification of problems that people with Multiple Sclerosis have, these have been divided into primary, secondary and tertiary sexual dysfunction.
Primary sexual dysfunction comes as a result of the neurological changes that affect the sexual response in both men and women. Decreased or unpleasant genital sensations, diminished capacity for orgasm, decrease in or loss of sex drive are considered to be primary sexual dysfunctions, along with the men’s difficulty of achieving or maintaining and erection, and women’s decreased or absent vaginal lubrication.
The nonsexual multiple sclerosis symptoms like bladder and bowel problems, muscle weakness, tremor, and impairments in attention and concentration, etc., can also affect the sexual response. These problems are considered secondary sexual dysfunction.
The psychosocial and cultural issues that can interfere with one’s sexuality are seen as the tertiary sexual dysfunction. The changes in self-perceived body image and self-esteem can interfere with sexuality and intimacy. Coping with the changes that MS brings is challenging, especially when it comes to sexuality; this is why partners need to have to have good communication.
