Another very common symptom in Multiple Sclerosis is pain, over half of the persons having MS experiencing it at some time. Usually the pain is irritative and burning – a dysesthesia, and it may occur in any part of the body. This is most likely caused by the demyelination of sensory tracts in the brain and spinal cord.
For pain, several antiseizure medications were very helpful. Carbamazepine, Gabapentin, topiramate, amotrigine, tiagabine, levetiraceta and oxcarbazepine are usually used to alienate pain. Neurochemical agents like misoprostol can be used as adjuvant medication. Tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline are also used, but since their effect is quite sedating, these are usually used for help with sleeping while in pain.
