Multiple Sclerosis Questions and Answers

When someone is been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, the next question asked is “what is the treatment”.  Unfortunately, one of the first things one suffering with multiple sclerosis finds out is the fact that there is no known cure for the moment, and the currently existing treatments only slow down the progression of the disease and minimize symptoms.

Medical treatment usually includes corticosteroids, interferon and immunosuppressants. However, patients also have a number of other therapies that proved to be quite effective in the management of MS symptoms. Managing the symptoms is the most important thing when it comes to MS, because these can be quite disabling. Cognitive Behavioral therapy proved to be effective, alongside Yoga, Tai Chi and acupuncture.

Today, there are also two therapies that show promising results: stem cell therapy and the liberation therapy. The first takes stem cells from the person’s body then wipes out their immune system with chemo, only to re-introduce the stem cells into the body and allow them to grow a new immune system that doesn’t affect the myelin. The liberation therapy is highly controversial and theorizes that MS is nothing more than a narrowing of blood vessels to the brain, and this can be easily fixed by surgery. The results are mixed and for some are only temporary.
