As it is well known, multiple sclerosis is a demyelinating disease, which means that the myelin coating around the axons and neurons is attacked and destroyed. This happens due to one’s immune system attacking myelin, which is seen as an enemy.
Now, the immune system will attack myelin no matter where it’s located in the body. Myelin is located mostly in one’s central nervous system, and eyes, but also almost all around the body. This is why, all tissues that have myelin in them are possible targets of multiple sclerosis.
At the same time, multiple sclerosis, due to the lack of proper nervous transmission, has various effects on various parts of the body, including the muscles, the eyes, the bowels, the brain, etc. This is why this condition is very complex in nature, because one can experience a wide variety of symptoms, some more severe than others, some more disabling than others. However, with proper medication the progression of the disease can be slowed down, and the symptoms can be lessened.
