Ms News

Everybody knows Oprah to be a very understanding, smart and gentle person, who is always willing to lend a helping hand. However, things seem to be a bit different when it comes to her own network, OWN.

An ex-employee at Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network sued Oprah & Co. on the grounds of being subject to a hostile work environment because of the fact that she is an MS sufferer.

According to the filed lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, Catherine Dunn, claims that during the time she worked as an assistant at OWN in August 2008, because of her MS she was “subjected to a hostile work environment”.

She also said that she was forced (it’s unclear whether by the company or her condition) to take a stress leave and leave of absence due to the fact that the workplace stress exacerbated her MS symptoms.  As she was out on leave, she claims that the company replaced her with "a non-disabled and younger employee."

The lawsuit was filed for wrongful termination, and other things, and Catherine Dunn asks for unspecified damages. Oprah & Co. have made no comments so far.

I wish this woman luck with her lawsuit. Stress at work and an exacerbation of M.S. have cannot be separated.
In 1990 I sued the City of New York for the same reason including a denial of a promotion based on my illness.
Though I received only a years salary as compensation, instead of the one and and a half million I was suing for..It was seen as a victory.
This is an emotionally and physically debilitating illness, but as an invisible disability it is often misunderstood.
